Diaphragmatic Breathing: Interactive Microlearning Experience
Transforming text-heavy instruction into a guided, engaging learning experience
Overview
This project demonstrates how static instructional content can be redesigned into an interactive learning experience that improves engagement, clarity, and usability. The goal was to help learners not just understand a breathing technique, but actually follow and apply it in real time.
The Problem
The original material was presented as a dense, text-based document. While informative, it required sustained attention and interpretation, making it difficult for learners to follow the breathing process step-by-step, especially in moments of stress when clarity and simplicity are essential.
The Solution
I redesigned the content into an interactive microlearning experience using Genially. It is one part of a corporate stress management program. The new format guides learners through the breathing process with clear pacing, visual structure, and intentional interaction.
The experience was designed to:
- Break information into manageable steps
- Guide learners through the process in real time
- Reduce cognitive overload
- Encourage active participation rather than passive reading
The Result
The redesigned experience transforms passive reading into active participation, making it easier for learners to follow the process, stay engaged, and apply the technique effectively.
This learning object went from static content to an interactive experience. It was designed with cognitive load and learner pacing in mind to support real-time application.
BEFORE: A text-heavy document requiring learners to read, interpret, and self-guide through the process.
AFTER: An interactive, step-by-step experience that supports learners with structure, pacing, and visual guidance.
Design Approach
This project was developed with a focus on learner experience and usability. Key design decisions included:
- Chunking content into small, digestible steps
- Guided pacing to support real-time participation
- Visual cues to reinforce the breathing process
- Minimalist design to reduce distraction and support focus
The goal was to create a calming, intuitive experience aligned with the learning objective.
Tools & Technology
- Genially (interactive design)
- Instructional design principles (adult learning, active learning strategies)
The Result
The redesigned experience transforms passive content into an engaging, learner-centered activity. Instead of reading instructions, learners are guided through the process, making it easier to follow, retain, and apply. This approach demonstrates how thoughtful instructional design can significantly improve both usability and learning effectiveness.
Reflection
This project highlights the importance of designing for real-world use. In situations where learners may feel stressed or overwhelmed, simplicity, structure, and clarity are critical. This redesign focuses on meeting learners where they are and supporting them through the experience.
